چکیده

CO adsorption on the Pt~111! surface is studied using first-principles methods. As found in a recent study @Feibelman et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 105, 4018 ~2001!#, we find the preferred adsorption site within density functional theory to be the hollow site, whereas experimentally it is found that the top site is preferred. The influence of pseudopotential and exchange-correlation functional error on the CO binding energy and site preference is carefully investigated. We also compare the site preference energy of CO on Pt~111! with the reaction energy of formaldehyde formation from H2 and CO. We show that the discrepancies between the experimental and theoretical results are due to the generalized gradient approximation ~GGA! treating different bond orders with varying accuracy. We can therefore expect that GGA results will contain significant error whenever bonds of different bond order are broken and formed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1488596#

CO adsorption and kinetics on well-characterized Pd films on Pt(111) in alkaline solutions

The electrochemistry of CO on a bare Pt(111) electrode as well as a Pt(111) electrode modified with pseudomorphic thin palladium films has been studied in alkaline solution by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. First Pd films were prepared and well characterized in UHV and subsequently transferred into the electrochemical cell for the registration of the voltammetric profi...

Infrared reflection absorption study of carbon monoxide adsorption on Fe-deposited Pt(111) surface

Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) was used to investigate carbon monoxide (CO) adsorption on sub-monolayer (ML)-thick Fe deposited Pt(111). The CO exposure to a clean Pt(111) surface at room temperature yielded linear-bonded and bridgebonded CO-Pt bands at 2090 and 1850 cm. The CO-Pt band intensities decreased steeply with increasing Fe thickness. For a 1-ML-thick-Fe/Pt surfac...

Structural, compositional and electrochemical characterization of Pt-Co oxygen-reduction catalysts.

Pt-Co thin-film electrocatalysts have been characterized using low-energy ion-scattering spectroscopy (LEISS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and electrochemistry (EC). For comparative purposes, LEISS and EC were also carried out on a bulk Pt(3)Co(111) single crystal. The extensive experimental work resulte...

Ethanol electrooxidation on the Co@Pt core-shell nanoparticles modified carbon-ceramic electrode in acidic and alkaline media

In this study, the electrocatalytic activity of the Co@Pt core-shell nanoparticles toward the ethanol oxidation reaction has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in acidic and alkaline media in details. The physicochemical data obtained in alkaline solution are compared to those in acidic solution. The obtained results demonstrate that while in the both media Co@Pt core...

CO oxidation on stepped-Pt(111) under electrochemical conditions: insights from theory and experiment.

The co-adsorption of CO and OH on two Pt stepped surfaces vicinal to the (111) orientation has been evaluated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Focusing on Pt(533) and Pt(221), which contain (100) and (111)-steps, respectively, we find that (111)-steps should be more reactive towards CO oxidation than surfaces containing (100)-steps. The DFT results are compared with ele...
